Workation at the Lauwersmeer Friesland

Remote Work at the Lauwersmeer in Friesland

We often welcome tourists and watersport enthusiasts to stay in one of our holiday homes, but recently, we hosted a different kind of guest: remote workers!

For those who aren’t familiar with the term: remote workers are people who work from a location other than a traditional office – sometimes even from a holiday destination. That was the case for Alieke and Daniëlle from Working Remotely. For their Dutch workation – the official English term for a working vacation – they chose one of our holiday homes on the shores of the Lauwersmeer.

Read on to find out how they experienced it – and how we did too.

The Charm of Village Life

Alieke and Daniëlle told us that, upon arrival, they immediately felt the charm of the surroundings. The picturesque village of Oostmahorn made a strong impression. After a walk along the Lauwersmeer, they started chatting with an older man from the village who was enjoying the autumn sun with his dog. Sitting down next to him on a bench, they were treated to wonderful stories about the region.

As they said to us when they returned from their walk: “It was a real moment of clarity – we realised this is a place where we could truly slow down and unwind. Wonderful!” And that’s exactly what we aim for when we host people on a workation: providing the perfect space to work and recharge at the same time.

Remote Work from a Holiday Home

We’d love to welcome more guests who combine travel and work – and that’s also the mindset behind how we furnish our holiday homes. We’ve added a large table with comfortable chairs in the living room, and the houses are equipped with fast and stable Wi-Fi. And it didn’t go unnoticed.

Alieke and Daniëlle told us: “The table is a great workspace – there’s plenty of room for a few people to work together. And if you want a change of scenery, the sunroom at the nearby restaurant Het Raadsel van de Wadden is a perfect alternative. The Wi-Fi is excellent in both places – which is pretty essential when you’re a digital nomad.”

Several of our houses are located next to each other, making it possible to book a group workation at Arrangie. Plus, we have a large network in the region and can help organise all kinds of activities – whether you’re looking for something active or relaxing.

Balancing Work and Exploring the Area

What makes our accommodation truly special is its location. You can focus and get work done here – but within moments, you’re out in expansive natural surroundings… or even on a boat!

That’s exactly what Alieke and Daniëlle did with Captain Aaldrik from Ervaarwater, who quickly became a favourite during their boat trip across the Lauwersmeer. He shared stories about how the Lauwersmeer was formed, the 120-year history of his boat, and the villages and nature they passed along the way.

And here’s something fun for anyone considering a group workation in Friesland: Aaldrik’s boat can also be used as a floating meeting space!

A Workation in Our Own Beautiful Friesland

All in all, this visit confirmed what we as holiday home hosts already suspected:

You don’t have to travel far to enjoy a great workation – our very own Friesland is the perfect destination!

The Lauwersmeer region offers a unique mix of peace, nature, and inspiration. We look forward to welcoming many more remote workers and offering them the chance to get work done in a truly beautiful setting.
